i.e., when animators from America and Japan get off their ass and use animation for something other than Ren & Stimpy bullshitting around for 22 minutes.

Well, the people at Adult Swim browse /a/. Poster even started letting them know what was coming and apologized for it.

As for me, Toonami got me into anime, turned me on to Daft Punk and Gorillaz, and gave me something to talk about with my friends when we weren't playing on the playground.

It told me I had a right to dream, and that I'd decide my own destiny by standing up against any self-doubt.
It introduced me to anime. I would watch DBZ every afternoon. It was perfect to my little fifth grade mind.
Like OP, it introduced me to Daft Punk. So, in a way, I should thank TOM for sowing the seed of electronic love that has grown so tall. Oh, and The White Stripes.

God, Toonami taught me to never give up, that through friendship and sheer will you can overcome any odds. It's bullshit, but it's the most inspiring bullshit ever.

It taught me that I'm an old old old fuck because it goes off the air the day befor my 25th birthday. Eleven fucking years ago I was getting yelled at for not coming out to dinner because I COULD NOT MISS Toonami.

But seriously - it's that I've grown to appreciate and love the classic hand-drawn styles, and not that slick high-gloss animation most productions sport now.

Toonami was my childhood.

Always looked forward to getting home and watching some goddamn kickass cartoons.

Toonami showed me anime. It showed me that cartoons where not just for kids. It showed me that imagination, creativity, and dreams were life skills, not kiddy pastimes. TOM's inspirational messages stuck in me, subconsciously stronger than anyone else's advice. It gave me the courage to like what I liked and fuck anyone else's opinion.

It seems cheesy to say that a cartoon block had influence on someone, but TOM was no ordinary host and Toonami was no ordinary program block.

I never would have met a bunch of my friends... on two occasions.
When I was a high school freshmen, I moved to California. I remembered Kenshin from Toonami and drew a picture of Kenshin. Threw it on my school binder. I had it out on my desk one day and this guy goes "... So... You like Kenshin?"
From that one event, and ultimately toonami, I was introduced to a now massive circle of friends whome I still see all the time.
I loved Toonami, and hope to one day get the same joy from something new I did from it.

It introduced DBZ into my life.

As a slightly chubby 5th grader, that was fucking HUGE.

Then Outlaw Star, which I hated at first, then watched again like two weeks ago and realized I was an idiot for hating it.

Then Cowboy Bebop.

Toonami ruled my afternoons.

Toonami was what made my childhood good, my friends in elementary school would talk about the latest DBZ, though we never mentioned the bumps. the bumps which sent messages i still follow to this day in my senior year in high school, they shaped my character, gave me my personal 'code of honor, and kept me from becoming a complete douchebag.

with each iteration of TOM i became more enthralled with the bumps, interested in the fact that rather than some no-name announcer or some filler between commercials, he was a true character, the true face of Toonami. the original TOM is hazy to me, as i was only 6-7 when toonami began broadcast, but the incident with the 'intruder' is still my biggest memory of the original tom, the next to versions were good, almost as good as the original, but then came the 4th and final version.

upon seeing him i knew that any thing that made toonami great was gone forever, only to be remembered by we, the Toonami Faithful.

Rest in Peace Toonami.

I miss midnight run

About eight years ago (god, was it really that long?) I was in 6th grade and my brothers were seniors. After school they would have friends over from time to time. Back then, Dragon Ball Z was new and interesting. One day, having only seen one episode ever of the show, I walked in to see two characters fighting on a green world falling to pieces. One character had shining gold hair, while the other was a colorless lizard thing with lipstick. It was intense. I asked my brothers who the character with the gold hair was. "Goku." they responded. I was confused. Having seen at least one episode before (where Bulma had to retrieve the falling 4-star ball from the depths of the water), I asked, "But I thought Goku had black hair?" They responded with the a simple phrase that touched me forever.
"Yeah, but now he's a Super Saiyan."

I didn't know it then, but those words led to years of rushing home to watch an hour of TV for the next three years. The biggest and longest-lasting obsession I've ever had. My love, DBZ.

I remember having a shitty day at elementary school but I could always count on coming home after it and watch some good old toonami shows to finally relax. And the friday night movies... Gundam Wind: Endless Waltz, Blue Submarine, DBZ movies... hell yes.

I also remember that when 9/11 happened, there was a shitstorm everywhere... it was sad and depressing everywhere. And that's when they were showing new episodes of DBZ. And that day, they didn't show one... that made me really mad. But then the next day, they showed TWO new episodes. That was fucking awesome.

Sarah's hologram flickered for a few seconds before fading. The machines around TOM died out too. The Absolution was absolutely silent. The only light left in the room emanated from a single red button across from the switch TOM had just pulled.

Even slower this time, he somberly ambled to the switch. He scanned his memory banks for any file relating to Toonami, feeling one last rush of nostalgia. Finally, after what seemed like an all too short eternity, he arrived at the button, reading the label above it.

TOM Final Killswitch.

TOM, hand shaking, rested a single finger on the button. He sighed again, and whispered...

"Bang."

A part of me is glad my parents got rid of cable. At the time I was whining and bitching because I wanted my Toonami. But I'm glad I never got to see Toonami fall, I don't have memories of it degrading, just of it shining.

The shit shaped my life. I wouldn't be who I am now without those years of watching Toonami. I'm among the gorup that eventually decid to go into animation/art because of those years watching it...

It's not jjust the shows. We all go back and watch the shows all the time. It was TOONAMI. Tom, the Absolution, the commercials, the speeches, the style, the substance. It took programming and made it an art. They did it with purpose, handing down lessons like gifts. They made TV more than just TV. People aren't lying when they say that we just lost something, that Toonami made us who we are. And every time I read a post about it, every time I think about it...I cry. Not just feel shitty, but have tears rolling down my face, snot running out of my nose, and I shake my head while I wonder what happened. What happened? Things weren't supposed to be like this, guys. Childhood is supposed to pass, but it's not supposed to just go away like this did.

But I'll never forget this feeling. As I keep on trying to move forward, through all the shit that everything has become, I won't forget it, and I'll keep moving.
