Let's talk about Over the Garden Wall.
God damn I just finished watching and I loved it. I was worried its hype would make me expect more than it could deliver but..damn.
What are your thoughts on the show? Any part you enjoyed most?
WHY DOES WIRT WEAR ONE GRAY SHOE AND ONE BLACK SHOE

Truly, they were Over the Garden Wall.

Going to make some hot apple cider and watch the whole thing back to back again this weekend.

Laughing at how tumblr it is
what the fuck does he know
Were this tweets confirmed legit?
I was just watching an episode and just noticed that at the very end of each episodes intro music you can hear
the whistle of the train that almost hits them. I thought that was kinda nifty.
>>67383982>the fucking noses
They were just badly done, it annoyed the crap out of me the whole time.>I was worried its hype would make me expect more than it could deliver but
This happened to me, the hype made it seem amazing, but it didn't live up to it. I didn't think it was that great, im surprised so many people liked it that much.
That wasn't acceptable in the 80s

Just re-watched this yesterday, my favorite part is the music. By a wide margin.
There aren't any songs that are bad. The weakest one is in Greg's dream and even that one's solid.
(114.20 KB, 447x527)
so its not confirmed or anything, but im a big fan of the "three witch sisters" all being baba yaga
where the evil seeming aunty whispers was the good one
the good seeming greg dream sister was evil
and the stitch witch was just a neutral cunt, since she removes all choice from her "kids"
No, this is just bait.

Finished watching the show, but still don't understand it well. Is Beatrice someone Wirt knows in real life? I didn't see her with Sara's friends or with those snooty girls that took Wirt's tape.
(302.66 KB, 1001x837)
its either supposed to be some sort of limbo and shes still stuck there, but happy there
or they're memories of people stuck in the dream
I like to think the Unknown is still a real place, but it exists on a different sort of plane. And you can't get there by getting lost on purpose. If it all existed in Wirt's mind then we wouldn't have been shown the Woodsman's daughter, since he didn't know about her.
Thank God for tumblr shitposting, otherwise OtGW threads would end up like Hellboy, where everyone agrees it's great and the thread dies after 10 or so replies.
Does anyone have the comic?
comfy drink with comfy show. Noice

I got the same feeling. It's sort of like a bizarre Narnia that they got to by having a near-death experience.
(402.38 KB, 999x1418)
Yeah, is there a torrent link anywhere?
Beatrice's clothes and hair mark her as having lived during the early 1800s. She's already dead in the real world.
Have you never seen a raggedy ann doll?
so what was the deal with the woodcuter daugther? was she trapped and free at the end?was she alive all along and the woodcutter is an idiot?did he died and the both meet at the afterlife?
The answer is
the episode implied that she was edelwooded like Greg was going to be, except American children aren't trusted to be able to handle that shit so a generic happy ending was slapped on
(351.01 KB, 758x614)
The Woodsman deserved a happy ending.
>>67392027>omitting Beatrice as a spiritual guide>omitting the Sullen who lie face down in the muddy river Styx (frogs)
Pretty good guide, needs some updating.
It's not a 1:1 theory but there are some neat parallels.
HOLY FUCKIN SHIT IS THIS OUT IN STORES YET?
i've got to have this.
(2116.74 KB, 1280x1978)
I kind of wish Wirt had died. I really like Wirt, but having him get stuck back in the Unknown right after saving Greg from the lake would have been nifty.
Maybe have a last scene of him sitting on the porch of Beatrice's house and looking content as he tells Beatrice he's waiting for Greg but jokes that he doesn't want Greg to come back too soon.
(2845.70 KB, 2160x1180)
what the shitfuck I was posting this pic at the exact same time, you beat me by a few secs
It was a coming of age type of deal for him though. He had to confront the Sarah thing for his development to be complete.
Beatrice should have become the Woodman's surrogate daughter though, instead of his actual daughter coming back for no reason.
(856.41 KB, 1280x720)
Beatrice already had a family, though. They could have just opened their home to the Woodsman and made him part of the family, though. He'd probably be cool to have around once he came to terms with the whole beast incident.
I wonder what got Beatrice pissed enough to throw a rock at a bluebird?
Beatrice was kind of a jerk. But she had a good heart in the end, and so learned to be less of a jerk. But she was still a jerk. A loveable jerk.
>And so a happy ending is met and all is done
There's the sign. There is something we aren't seeing in the end there. That ending isn't the true ending.

Neat article about the other Divine Comedy stuff in the show besides Beatrice and the trees.
Adelaide does as the Beast commands her. The original plan was to separate Wirt and Greg so she gets a slave and the Beast gets an Edelwood tree, but it failed.
Great show. I also like that it's only 10 episodes, so it didn't needlessly drag on too much

What's that Anon-kuns? Don't you want to hear more about how Wirt is half latino or a POC even though he is the whitest boy around? Or about how Wirt totally had a crush on Jason Funderberker or vice versa? Or about how Wirt doesn't like his stepdad because he wasn't supportive of trans panromantic asexual Wirt or because he's just plain abusing him? Or how Wirt said he doesn't like labels so obviously he's nonbinary like that's not labeling him right?
(2151.76 KB, 1735x1150)
I just... I feel like there's a time and place for trans or ethnic headcanons but Tumblr takes it so far that every member of every cast HAS to be some kind of minority to make up for the general lack. It just... Ugh, it's the opposite of being actually creative and just creating a "hurrsounique" homogeny
And meanwhile when the Attack on Titan movie casting news comes out, they whine and complain about all the white characters being played by Japanese people with no self-awareness whatsoever.
Can someone please translate that into English? I don't speak Tumblrese.
This. I thought the first one was just laden with dyslexic typos, but now I see it was intentional and I wonder what the fuck I just read.
Wirt was born a girl but he feels like he doesn't have any gender. He identifies as a boy during the show and only feels more comfortable exploring outside the two normal genders once Greg gets obnoxious about being (while having been born a boy) whatever gender he feels like at the moment. Greg shows Wirt genderoftheday and genderofthenight which post a new wacky gender every day! Today's gender: this makes actual transgender people look like jokes to people outside of tumblr
Greg is so happy wacky gender blog and Wirt is mostly spooky wacky gender blog but just the harmless/mild wacky genders like a bunch of shadowy cats and I didn't click on the other because this is stupid.
Beatrice was born intersex and her parents raised her as a boy but feels like she's a girl. She's depressed for no reason really but unrelated to feeling like a girl. She met Adelaide before she became a bird because witches = doctors and she thought Adelaide could medicate her for her depression.
Speaking of mental health issues, Wirt and Greg are both autistic. Wirt has social anxiety and is psychotic and Sara is autistic too and type 2 bipolar (hypomania/depression type) (^: (and born a boy while uhh questioning her gender? girl.)
(1862.07 KB, 2160x1124)
Here, I am forumlingual:
Wirt was determined female at birth but identifies as male and wants to explore his gender since Greg is dabbling in genderfluidity... Wirt is Asexual... Uh... Genderoftheday and Genderofthenight are blogs, don't bother visiting them. Bea was born intersex but determined male, has depression... Um... Autism reigns... And Sara was determined male at birth but loosely considers herself a girl. WHEW.
That was gross and now I feel dirty
Where's the "What I expected" picture that shows how people do these now? Remember when it was just three images? Simpler times.

This pisses me off on so many fucking levels. Why does Tumblr have to do this.
What really gets me is when they go I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS CHARACTER IS BUT THEY'RE DEFINITELY NOT CIS
I mean, what the fuck?
What's with their fucking obsessions with turning every character autistic or transgender? Why can't they just accept the characters gender identities and move on? Yeah, I get it. Having an ACTUAL transgender character in a children's cartoon would be nice. But this is just dumb. And autistic? Really? Come on. None of them show signs of autism. Goddamn, Tumblr.
cuz cisscum, amirite?

I'm going to post some tumblr headcanons that were unoffensive to make it hurt less:
>Wirt goes with Greg to the pet shop to get thungs for Jason Funderberkerâs habitat. There, they buy little figurines that look like the people they met in the Unknown
>wirtâs favorite band was the beatles for a little too long.
>Greg seems like heâd be treated as the weird kid at school who does some pretty random stuff. Like heâd be the type to come to school with worms in his pockets, and everyoneâs just âThere goes Greg with his worms,â but what they donât know is he picks up those worms on the way to school so they wonât dry out on the sidewalk. Itâs his way of rescuing them.
>Wirt gets too flustered when he first kisses Sara that she offers to let him practice with an m&m taped to a mirror
>someone comments offhandedly on how wirt uses that hat to cover up a formidable ratâs nest
>but then he walks by and hears them and is just like: âbirdâs nest, actuallyâ and removes his hat and beatrice is comfortably nestled on top of his head, fast asleep
>Wirt becomes an architect
>one day, when heâs old enough, greg will join marching bandâ¦.

I'm fine with this.
m&m taped to a mirror tho?
So Wirt can get used to the sensation of delicious chocolate.
>>67408186>Wirt's favorite band was The Beatles for a little too long
What exactly is this implying? John and Paul were musical geniuses.
Eh, I think what they mean is that he probably went through a period where it was ALL he listened to... For a while.
Oh. Yeah, I remember when I went through that phase.

I think we all did...
I could never get into The Beatles. They have a few songs that I like, but most of their music does nothing for me.
Which is really weird considering I'm a HUGE fan of both Queen and They Might Be Giants, both of whom were massively influenced by The Beatles, and are frequently compared to them. But like, they're both inspired by The Beatles in opposite ways, like they both started at The Beatles and ran in opposite directions, so logically, The Beatles are a combination of my two favorite bands of all time, and yet, I still can't get into them.

Beatrice leads Wirt further into the woods and away from home. Beatrice betrays him. Both those things drive Wirt to despair, allowing the Beast to claim him. Everything was Beatrice's fault.

You guys, was the ending a rock fact?
(140.67 KB, 600x800)
I'm sure people have thought about it better than I did, as I just finished the series and am really half assing this, but
the whole "if dreams can't come true, then why not pretend" part of the intro song plays over the rock and then in the outro "dancing in the swirl of golden memories, the loveliest lies of all" is sung over the rock again. And the rock literally being the last frame of the series. >>67410934
I really, really wanted the rules to too old cat to be elaborated upon.
I just assumed
the turtles were the evil spirits that possessed the bodies of things that ate them, like the dog. It's weird that there was no turtle in the spirit girl, but the fact that her auntie was a witch, it made sense for her to keep a barrel load of them (for whatever reason).
Constantine Story time
I'm pretty sure it's a limbo because of the shared memories and the fact that there was an after for beatrice
WIth all this talk about Dante's Inferno, I decided to storytime Mickey's Inferno from Italian Disney comics over here>>67414280

Left out suicide/trees as well.
>come to talk about the show
>people are just posting fanart
>people posting tumblr bullshit
There comes a time where we have to realize there's nothing left to talk about. And we've clearly reached it.
Nah, in the beginning she is shown gazing into the woods. The most robust theory is that she wandered into the woods (or was lured) and the Woodsman went looking for her. The Woodsman was fooled by the Beast into believing that she'd died, and this sent him on his mission of wandering about looking for the trees to cut down for oil. The Beast mentions that the Woodman doesn't want to return to the empty home, and we know that he lives at the mill where Beatrice's family once lived. So the Woodsman has never returned home. Meanwhile, his daughter has found her way out of the forest and has been living at the house the whole time. She was nowhere near as valuable as the Woodsman, who was uniquely suited to cutting down the trees.
When the Woodsman returns home he finds that she's been there all along.
(178.50 KB, 722x418)
that always sounded like bullshit to me. It feels like a pretty big stretch to believe that she was just sitting around their home this whole time, and that the beast would rely on the Woodsman just never returning home even once. Besides, it's just not a satisfying story for the Woodsman.
>>67394311>>And so a happy ending is met and all is done
Perhaps the LIES the frog sings of tells us that the ending isn't real. Maybe Wirt and Greg die from the train or from drowning/freezing, and they end up in The Unknown, which is a sort of purgatory (the Dante thing) where they must earn their way out. At the end, having passed their test, rather than truly returning to the living world, their refined souls ascend to heaven and the true afterlife.
Just a thought.
>>67419124>that always sounded like bullshit to me. It feels like a pretty big stretch to believe that she was just sitting around their home this whole time, and that the beast would rely on the Woodsman just never returning home even once. Besides, it's just not a satisfying story for the Woodsman.
I think it's by far the most robust theory. Don't confuse what you want with whether or not this was the intent of the creator/writers. Remember, the Beast overtly taunts the Woodsman about how he wouldn't be able to handle returning home to that empty house. It's strongly implied that the Woodsman hasn't returned home, and that the Beast has a particular interest in preventing him from returning home.
Within the song itself the lies refer to the beauty of Autumn, and it's colors. The fact that those colors come from the leaves dying doesn't detract from its beauty.
Beyond having elements of Dante, OtGW is about how art and culture relate to death, and how art helps us overcome our fear of it. The woodsman's fear of death is what actually kept the beast alive.
It's no accident the story takes place on Halloween, which is all about making light of death.
Having the song refer only to immediate events of the story rather than the show as a whole would be an oversight.
(1365.10 KB, 1425x1111)
>>67419648>Within the song itself the lies refer to the beauty of Autumn, and it's colors.
You're leaving out "golden memories", which is what directly precedes "the loveliest lies". It would be silly to think that the golden memories refer solely to memories of autumnal beauty. I think golden memories IN GENERAL are the loveliest lies, as we tend to forget a lot of the bad and recall, with nostalgia, times past.
A frequently overlooked (probably due to being seldom-heard) piece of this is this piece of dialogue from the read/play book/record set (spoken by Jack Jones):>"What are memories, but stories of time lost forever? Fragments of a reality we will never experience again. And as one recalls these flights of fancy, we lose ourselves in the believing of false life of our own creation. Something we seem to remember, but canât rationally trust to be true. And so it was with Wirt and Gregory, and their descent ever further into The Unknown."
>>67420597>piece of this is this piece of
That was a bit of unintentional poetry for you.
Anyways, I thought I'd add the bit that precedes what I just posted. On the record they get on the ferry, the frog sings, then they presumably continue on their way to Adelaide's.>As the sun went down, they reminisced about the fun adventures they had shared, and although they would miss each other very much, they knew that theyâd never forget all the wonderful memories. Or would they?
Which one was baritone anon?

Are we not supposed to like the Beatles now? Fuck that shit. Abbey Road side 2 montage forever.
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.
In a sense the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little attention to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as one can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for free for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply publicize what the music business wants to make money with.
Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great musician like Tim Buckley, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Beatles. And rock critics will study more of rock history and realize who invented what and who simply exploited it commercially.
Beatles' "aryan" music removed any trace of black music from rock and roll: it replaced syncopated african rhythm with linear western melody, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles.
Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of the Beatles, and for a good reason. They could not figure out why the Beatles' songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that the Beatles were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Beatlemania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). THat phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants the Beatles more attention than, say, the Kinks or the Rolling Stones. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Beatles' music. Ray Davies of the Kinks was certainly a far better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney. The Stones were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Fab Fours'. And Pete Townshend was a far more accomplished composer, capable of "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia". Not to mention later and far greater British musicians. Not to mention the American musicians who created what the Beatles later sold to the masses.
The Beatles sold a lot of records not because they were the greatest musicians but simply because their music was easy to sell to the masses: it had no difficult content, it had no technical innovations, it had no creative depth. They wrote a bunch of catchy 3-minute ditties and they were photogenic. If somebody had not invented "beatlemania" in 1963, you would not have wasted five minutes of your time to read a page about such a trivial band.
tl;dr lennon/mccartney is the bryke of rock music
so will there be more of this show?
Even if she wasn't sitting at home, she'd be wandering around the woods looking for the Woodsman, which would make it pretty easy for the Beast to trick her into not finding him.
I think it's understandable for the Woodsman to never go home if he thought that her soul literally relied on him getting as many trees as possible
Does anybody have a picture or looped gif of the three frogs blowing bubbles from their pipes in episode 6?
I'd hope for another story in the same style but different time period with meaningful callbacks to the first series.
Is there anywhere I can watch Tome of the Unknown?
Nope, it's only been shown at film festivals. I anticipate a release on Blu-Ray along with the rest of the series.
I'm not that baritone, but I am A baritone, and I like that song enough that I'm currently practicing plunking it out on my ukulele so I can sing along to it, because that sounds like it'd be fun.

My little sisters liked it but I did have to explain to them that they were almost dying in the river and that they slipped into a different world called the Unknown. I suspect they understood that already to some extent, but since they're sheltered kids I assumed they had some confusion (and mental blocks?) going on.
They love the frog, Greg and the Schooltown Follies episode.
No, i meant that we were shown the ending of the characters, but their "lives" or existence in the Unknown continue and we do not know how that ends, or what end they all met when they were alive/in the mortal world.
Kids I babysit say they don't like Gravity Falls because it's too creepy, so I don't think they'd like OtGW much.
No, they're dead.
If the memories are lies why would it show the woodsman reuniting with his daughter after they leave the unknown
That it was a world that got affected with its inhabitants' subconscious, so it's real but not real?
What is that song right in the begining?

Children's choir version of "Potatoes and Molasses" that will never be released on anything because there will never be an OST or DVD release.
Greg is five.
Greg shouldn't even know what his own penis is yet, for Christ's sake.
What if they're not dead, but they're almost dead? What with the Beast trying to get them to give in and surrender to becoming a tree and shit.
Most likely answer is that they entered an afterlife limbo, yeah. If they had stayed in the Unknown then they would have drowned in real life.
My brains hurt
Are you sure, im pretty sure I've heard the full version on here, or maybe I was just dreaming.

Then you have a pretty poor reading of what was presented, considering they were suspended in that river waiting to drown the whole time they were in the Unknown, coupled with all the evidence pointing towards them entering the afterlife.
Their "real world" bodies would have. Given that the Unknown seems to be a place were people live, yet we see Quincy Endicott living there while also seeing his grave that you can die in the "real world" while continuing on in the weird timelessness of the Unknown.
Okay, I'm sorry, what I mean is: Sure, they might've died in the 1980s world or whatever, but they wouldn't have instantly turned to edelwood or whatever.

Funny how tumblr is shipping Wirt with the white girl and not the black girl.
Not into the whole shipping thing but how is that funny? Beatrice has more interactions and screen time than Sara. Sara is like just there for the sake of storytelling. So it makes sense people would ship them. Besides shipping doesn't have to make any sense.

I understand why McHale doesn't want to continue Wirt's story, and thinks it wouldn't have artistic integrity that way.
But if The Unknown is a dreamlike Purgatory between Life and Death that is influenced by the dreams and memories of the lost souls that wander through, I think the Unknown would be great as a series with a different character and a different arc each time. The Unknown could even look different each time and have new inhabitants. There's lots of room for creativity.

So how can the Unknown be
the afterlife if in the tavern episode Beatrice says that the innkeeper will die someday and that when that happens she'll laugh and laugh? How can the dead die?
It isn't the afterlife, it's a magical realm like Narnia or Wonderland.
I like >>67438821
's interpretation. But if it is the afterlife or limbo then maybe Beatrice doesn't know that. Maybe she got there in the same way as Greg and Wirt.
What if none of them know they're dead?
Then how come all the

Quincy's name on the gravestone in the "Eternal Gardens" graveyard that the show is named after
The Unknown is a state between Life and Death where souls rest in limbo. Clearly the souls there can die since they can turn into trees which are chopped up for the beast. There is probably a heaven or a hell that they can pass on to, but instead they reside in the Unknown. That's why Greg and Wirt are able to escape back to the real world without fully dying.

(213.53 KB, 1176x1882)
Maybe if he accepts the role as lantern bearer, he becomes more and more beastlike as time goes on. Maybe the Woodsman didn't because he resisted the Beast at every turn.
Wirt would be a sad Beast. He'd probably bear his own lantern, scavenging just adlewood twigs to keep going and sadly looking at anybody who crosses his path.
If you want artistic integrity, don't repeat any characters that were featured already.
It's a world where you can slip when you have a near death experience? And the world warps based on the inhabitants' subconscious?
If you stay in the Unknown, you die in the real world.
(67.52 KB, 240x248)
Sara isn't black or white. At least not anymore. She's clearly a skeleton.
I was thinking more like he offers up his soul being placed inside the lantern exchange for saving Greg.
The Beast could be something like a Wendigo to go with the folky feel of the story. He's free only when someone else takes his place. That could be Wirt.
The Beast doesn't want a replacement, he'll die otherwise.
He dies if the lantern goes out while his soul is inside. They never elaborated on what happens when his soul is replaced and/or released.

It was an overall satisfying show.
Did you catch Quincy Endicott's name on one of the graves.
Or the graveyard being named "Eternal Garden"
or the Black Turtles poster in Wirt's room?
(653.86 KB, 1280x720)
I had not caught that. Seems like the protagonist had no opportunity to read it himself, unless it's written on both sides.
So why did the Woodsman steal the lanter in the first place?
The beast wanted it back anyway so it doesn't seem he gave it.
looking at a screenshot of him is missing the point
(612.56 KB, 963x1217)
Some people get pretty nuts with the theories, but it's pretty clear there's something to do with the afterlife going on.>Dante's Inferno has a level of hell where those who commit suicide turn into trees>Beatrice shares a name with the guide from Dante's Purgatorio>Two coins are need to cross the River Styx
The Beast only wanted it back because he wanted to make Wirt or Greg the new lantern bearer. Woodsman didn't steal the lantern, the Beast just told him that he put his daughter's soul in there.
(655.96 KB, 1280x720)
He seemed to think his daughter was in there. We can only assume the beast told him that. Why the beast didn't just keep holding his own lantern, is unknown. I guess it's easier to lurk and pounce if you don't have to carry it around. Almost refreshing to see a villian willing to win by straight out telling a bunch of lies.
>you will never have a little brother who loves you like Greg loves Wirt
(504.06 KB, 1280x720)
It would be pretty easy to see how the whole thing might be interpreted as a near-death experience.
Those things seem like they could be coincidences or just allusions. To me, the big clear-cut argument that the Unknown is somehow related to the afterlife or limbo is that Wirt and Greg were drowning in the "real world" the entire time they were there.
I don't think I want to know the specific details about what the Unknown is or how it works. But I do believe: 1) it's related to death and 2) it's real at least in some sense.

Except the bell was still there. So both worlds can influence each other somehow.
Souls not ready quite yet. Buried underground so the beast doesn't claim them.
After they had time to adjust to being in the unknown they are "harvested"
then how does Gregory have memories of it
Jason Funderberker holding hands with bird girl
Funny how they interrupted Greg before he could confirm or deny that they had the same experiences.
But the light at the end was blinking, like how in cartoons when a frog eats a firefly.
>>67443275>Funderberger is getting some>you will never be as smooth as Funderberger
I really doubt high schoolers would look so amazed by fireflies
The fact of the matter is that
the Unknown being real makes for a better story, so even if there is evidence that it was all a dream, I choose to interpret it differently because otherwise the story is shittier and I'm left unsatisfied.
All they are seeing is a large frog with a blinking light emanating from it.
You can hear the ringing though. It seems like it's just lighting up each time it rings and then the light goes out quickly each time.
When did fireflies ever show up?
I like that Jason is still an okay dorky guy with friends. They didn't go too far in the opposite direction of the asshole jock that I expected.
The ending was left intentionally vague, they didn't want a clear ending, they wanted an ending you interpret for yourself.
Hey, blame the writers.
(89.46 KB, 432x324)
In chrstianity you body dies but your soul does not.
Hell is the state of not being able to receive God's grace.
The Unknown could be seen as a neutral place/state.
so you mean purgatory/limbo/any other not heaven hell named place thats neutral
They arr rook same
Because, like Wirt and Greg, Beatrice is
not aware that she's stuck between life and death. Plus when you die in the Unknown you go to Heaven or Hell. Greg almost got to Heaven when he went to "Cloud City", with all its clouds and angels, but of course he revived because he never got past the welcoming committee.
>>67443256>tfw it's not real, it's a dream in Wirt's head
Hey, I wrote that list. I am firmly on the side of the Unknown being some other dimension, shared unconscious world, and/or limbo where the experiences of those entering shape the environment.
Aside from obvious giveaway things like the bell in the frog's belly, we have stuff like the fact that Greg is the one who heard "two old cat", while some other things relate to Wirt. At the very least they were in a shared dream, which itself is supernatural.
(55.43 KB, 600x587)
They're the remnants of lost souls that died in The Unknown, whether by the hand of the beast or something else. I will now list my evidence for this theory:
Auntie Whispers has many turtles. Auntie Whispers' daughter has killed many travellers. It is not a huge leap to infer that the two items are at least in some way connected.
The Beast consumes Edelwood oil to survive. When the dog eats the turtle, it bears a likeness to the beast because it has drawn its power from the same source. that is, the oil produced by lost souls.
In Greg's dream/journey, a bearded man with a red pointed hat is shown holding a lantern and following a marching black turtle. This could be a glimpse at what would have become of Wirt had he decided to become the bearer of the lantern, chasing for lost souls to consume as fuel.
If there are any better theories I'd be very happy to hear them.
Well he knew Wirt's suggestion for the frog name, so Greg definitely experienced the Unknown as well
(29.24 KB, 250x238)
Some have mentioned a likely Tom Waits influence on some things in otgw. The singing/music of the Highwayman is somewhat Waitsian, the Old North Wind is VERY Waitsian, and I recall speaking to someone here about a track on The Black Rider with the lines:>There is a light in the forest>There is a face in the tree
But I've just thought of one that hits even closer to home, from a really great track, Black Market Baby:>She lives in a house>Way back off the road>There's a man with a lantern>And he carries her soul
I think my memory was finally jogged by this post:>>67449388
Here is the song:
wouldn't be surprised if the influences were legit
why do some people turn into edelwood and others turn into turtles
(715.43 KB, 1920x2160)
8/10 good job! I was pretty annoyed until you got to Beethoven and I realized what you were really doing.
Not him but I think only the people who die near or because of the Beast become edelwood trees, since the Beast looks similar to that too.
I don't know, but the turtles do seem to be black like oil, and when the dog chokes on one it seems like it's totally dunked in oil, with eyes like the rainbow shimmer you get on an oily surface. My guess is turning the bodies into trees before they become turtles or skeletons is how the Beast needs to process them for the lantern, otherwise they can't be burned.

It was a troll, man, and a damn good one. The Beatles had tons of critical praise and artistic and cultural influence. This was written to sound like someone who only knew about five Beatles songs and was dismissive of them.
To bring this back to OTGW, the Beatles are considered the best rock band still because rock music itself reached a creative high point in the late 1960s. After about 1970, it still sold great but wasn't seen as the ultimate expression of the times, a form of the zeitgeist. The fracture into sub genres is a sign of this. OTGW is the best cartoon I've seen in forever, better than anything on the air now, things I really like. But the ultimate test of its power is if OTGW can inspire other animation to new heights. I think it can do that but we're in for a long wait.
I like that the show didn't shy away from making Wirt and Beatrice genuinely reprehensible. Made their redemption arcs all the better.
Too bad Greg didn't change one bit. He annoyed me the most.

That's complete bullshit. The while point of it is to keep girls in feminine roles. That is one lazy frog if it was drowning.
Probably went into shock after rolling down the hill.
showed it to my class of 1st graders with special needs. they loved it.
Yes, his nickname is Thunderbreaker.
Yeah, the cemetery is called Garden, Forever Garden, I too lazy to look.
Yeah but frogs can breathe through their skin.
It's just passed out and they gave it a little blanket is all. Paramedics aren't animal doctors and probably didn't know what to do with a frog in shock.
Seriously, I didn't know this was in physical form. That needs to be standard merchandise! Why is there still no good merchandise for this?
They just don't think that the cost to make the merchandise will be worth it. I guess it didn't do so well in sales.

fukken' pissed my pants
I found some on ebay for about 80~ bucks right now. Im sorely tempted on buying this. Why am I so compelled on buying it.
That money won't go to the creators and it's not worth that price, just buy the show itself on itunes.
With my own hands
Its the record and book. I'm going to get the show too.
I'm pretty sure cloud city was an evil dream. The queen lady was the last character we saw Greg with, and the next scene Greg was with the beast.
Greg's wish was to take Wirt's place.
The Queen seemed pretty nice all in all, she was surprised and sad at Greg's wish.
Three? I guess Beatrice, and there was the demon possessed girl, who was the third?

Are you really forgetting the girl who Wirt crushed on the whole series?

Oh, I assumed he was talking about 3 aside from sara. But for real tho, Wirt is a fucking retard for not jumping on that bird pussy.
10/10 best soundtrack of all time
>>67450756>he was being flippant, as usual. the joke was that greg was given the coins for being smart -> greg does something stupid with the coins -> greg makes a funny comment.
Are you serious? Greg has very rarely looked or sounded more serious than he did in that scene.>he wasn't wrong though.
The whole thing was Wirt's fault for being such a pussy, that's the whole point of the story. Everything Greg did only brought him closer to his crush and a social life in general, while Wirt kept overthinking everything and hiding due to his intense pussification.
How about they just make something else rather than running it into the ground until everyone hates it like every other fucking show?

>Beatrice will never visit the land of the living.
This looks good but, eh, looks too similar to movies like Tangled and Frozen, and I've seen enough of that shit.

She would probably go wicked anyhow. She'd come home with tattoos. Tattoos written with contractions.
